Elizabeth Castle: This Castle was built on a tidal island off the coast of Saint Helier in the 16th and 17th centuries when the power of cannons meant that the existing stronghold at Mont Orgueil was insufficient to defend the Island and the port of St Helier was vulnerable to attack by ships. Elizabeth Castle has defended Jersey for more than 300 years. Sir Walter Raleigh lived in the castle when appointed Governor of Jersey from 1600 to 1603, and named it after Queen Elizabeth I.

You can take the amphibious Castle Ferry or walk out along the causeway at low tide. Experience history coming to life with live demonstrations and gunfire! Access to the exhibitions and Castle Mount is very limited. Wheelchair users should contact the castle kiosk located on the Esplanade to ensure that transport on the amphibious vehicle is available.
